At Champagne Lallier, we understand that savoring the full experience of our handcrafted Champagnes involves more than just taste—it’s about embracing the ritual and elegance that defines Champagne culture. The way you hold your glass significantly influences the temperature of your Champagne, and therefore its aromas and flavors.
The classic and most recommended way to hold a Champagne glass is by gently pinching the stem between your thumb and first two or three fingers. This prevents your hand from warming the Champagne, ensuring it stays perfectly chilled. It also allows the Champagne’s delicate aromas to fully develop without interference from your body heat.
Alternately, you may prefer to hold your Champagne glass by its foot. We’ll explore these two methods in this article.
We never recommend holding a Champagne glass by the rim or bowl as it will warm the Champagne due to the proximity of your hand, smudge the glass and generally detract from the Champagne experience.
A stemmed glass with a wide bowl and narrow opening is essential for fully appreciating the nuances of our Champagne Lallier expressions. The stem exists not only to maintain the ideal serving temperature but also showcases the effervescence and clarity of our meticulously crafted Champagnes.

Method number 1: Stem
Holding your Champagne glass by the stem is a classic and practical approach. This method offers several benefits:
Position
Holding your Champagne glass by the stem is a classic and elegant way to enjoy your wine and it’s how we would recommend enjoying every glass of Lallier Champagne. Gently grasp the stem of the glass just above the base using your thumb and first two or three fingers. This creates a secure hold without putting too much pressure on the delicate glass. Keep your ring finger and pinky relaxed and slightly curved inward. This adds a touch of grace and prevents your hand from looking cramped.
If it feels more comfortable, you can use all four fingers to encircle the stem instead. The most important thing is to find a grip that feels natural and secure for you. Remember, the goal is to hold the glass in a way that feels comfortable and elegant, allowing you to fully appreciate the aromas and flavors of your Champagne without warming it with your hand.
Reason
By holding your Champagne glass exclusively by the stem, you safeguard the optimal temperature of your Champagne. Your hands’ natural warmth won’t transfer to the bowl, ensuring the Champagne stays perfectly chilled. This consistent temperature allows the delicate aromas and nuanced flavors to gracefully unfold and ascend towards the lip of the glass.

Method number 2: Foot
Holding your Champagne glass by the foot of the glass offers an alternative approach but holding a glass by the stem is our preferred method.
By cradling the foot, you maintain the ideal temperature and preserve the delicate aromas and flavors of your Champagne. Hand-blown Champagne glasses are meticulously crafted with the foot as the most robust and balanced element, grasping it allows you to control the entire glass—stem and bowl—as a cohesive unit.
However, this method requires a secure grip and might not feel as natural as holding the glass by the stem.
Position
Once lifted, take the glass by its round foot keeping the thumb on the top portion, while the first and second forefingers grasp the bottom of the foot.
Reason
Holding your Champagne glass by its foot offers the benefit of protecting the Champagne from the warmth of your hands.
Champagne Lallier believes that the pleasure of our Champagnes extends beyond taste. We invite you to engage all your senses, even in the simple act of holding the glass. After all, what is most important to us is that you savor each exquisite drop and allow our Champagnes to tell our story.
